How many toilets does Cal/OSHA require on a jobsite?
Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526 requires at least 1 toilet for every 20 employees, or fraction of 20, of each sex. A crew of fewer than 5 workers may share 1 single-user, all-gender toilet. Jobsite toilets must be kept clean and stocked with toilet paper. Federal OSHA Table D-1 sets a similar count.

Based on Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526: at least 1 toilet per 20 employees or fraction of 20, of each sex. Confirm requirements with your safety officer.
| Workers on site | Cal/OSHA minimum (per sex) | Our recommended setup |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | 1 single-user, all-gender toilet | 1 standard unit, weekly service |
| 5–10 | 1 | 1 standard unit, weekly service |
| 11–20 | 1 | 1 unit with 2 services a week, or 2 units weekly |
| 21–40 | 2 | 2 units with 2 services a week, or 4 units weekly |
| 41–60 | 3 | 3 units with 2 services a week, or 6 units weekly |
The legal minimum is in Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526. Federal OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 calls for 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers above 20, and per 50 above 200. Section 1926.51(f) covers handwashing.
Check first: The table separates the legal minimum from our servicing advice. This is not legal advice. Confirm the count with your safety officer or general contractor.

How often are construction toilets serviced?
Construction toilets from David Rental Works are pumped, cleaned and restocked once a week, and that weekly service is included in the 28-day price. One weekly service fits up to about 10 workers per unit on a 40-hour week. Larger crews per unit should add a second weekly visit.
- The driver pumps the 60-gallon waste tank of the PolyJohn PJN3.
- Walls, seat, urinal and floor are washed and sanitized.
- Fresh deodorizer and water go into the tank.
- Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are restocked.
- The visit date is logged, and the driver checks the door, vent and level.
Service happens on a set day each week. You do not need to call for it. Read how the schedule and billing work on our long-term porta potty rental page.
Where should a toilet go on a construction site?
Place a construction toilet on flat, firm ground within 15 feet of where our truck can park, close to the work but out of traffic. Keep a 4-foot clear path for the hand truck and no overhead wires lower than 12 feet at the truck spot. Gate codes and a site contact go on the driver's work order.
- Keep the unit out of equipment lanes, dumpster swap areas and concrete pump setups.
- Do not place it under scaffolding, roof edges or a tear-off chute. Falling debris can crack the roof.
- Face the door away from the street when you can, for privacy.
- Put it near the work so crews do not walk far, but not where a forklift or skid steer turns.
- In Santa Ana wind season, mostly October to March, ask us to stake or strap the unit.

A unit on a City of Whittier street or sidewalk needs a Public Works encroachment permit. Our Cal/OSHA jobsite toilet rules guide covers more placement and count questions.
Can you send a certificate of insurance and invoice us net-30?
Yes. David Rental Works emails a certificate of insurance (COI) the same day you ask. Contractors can apply for net-30 invoicing, and approval takes about 2 business days. Until approval, the first 28-day cycle is paid by Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover or debit card at booking.
Send us the certificate holder name and address when you book. The COI goes to whoever you name, such as the owner, GC or property manager.
Will a 3-day construction job be billed a full 28-day cycle?
A 3-day job on a construction rate would be billed 1 full 28-day cycle, so we usually quote it at event pricing instead. Event pricing covers up to 3 days on site with delivery and pickup included. For any job under 1 week, we price both ways and quote whichever total is lower.
| Job length | How we usually quote it | Weekly service |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 days | Event pricing | Not needed; unit arrives clean |
| 4–7 days | Both ways; you get the lower total | Ask if the crew is large |
| 1–4 weeks | One 28-day cycle | Included |
| Over 4 weeks | 28-day cycles until you call for pickup | Included |

What do home remodels, ADU builds and roofing jobs need?
Most home remodels, ADU builds and roofing jobs need 1 standard porta potty with weekly service. Add a hand wash station or a unit with a built-in sink when crews eat on site. Driveway placement usually needs no permit, but a unit on a Whittier street needs a Public Works encroachment permit.
| Job | Typical setup | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen or bath remodel | 1 standard unit | Keeps the crew out of the house restroom |
| ADU or garage conversion | 1 standard unit + hand wash station | Backyard gates need about 48 inches clear |
| Roofing tear-off | 1 standard unit | Set it away from the drip edge and debris chute |
| New home or addition | 1–2 units, weekly or 2x/week | Count workers at peak, such as framing or drywall |
Need more room to wash up? See the hand wash station rental. Homeowners who need an accessible option can compare the wheelchair-accessible unit.

How much is a porta potty for a construction site?
A standard construction unit starts at $165 per 28 days with weekly service, plus $60 one-time delivery and pickup. A unit with a sink starts at $205, a wheelchair-accessible unit at $215 and a hand wash station at $145 per 28 days. A second weekly service starts at $45 per extra visit. Typical starting price as of October 2026; your itemized quote is final.
Is servicing automatic or do I schedule it?
Automatic. Weekly service runs on a set day and is included in the 28-day price. Call us only to add a second visit or change the day.
Do you have insurance? Our jobsite needs a certificate.
Yes. We email a certificate of insurance the same day you ask. Give us the certificate holder name and address when you book.
Can I bill it to our accounts payable?
Yes, once your company is approved for net-30 invoicing. Approval takes about 2 business days. The first cycle can go on a card while you wait.
Can you guarantee a morning delivery?
We give a morning window, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., but we cannot guarantee an exact time. The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival.
Even if I take it for 3 days, are you charging me for the full month?
No, not when event pricing is cheaper. A 3-day job on a construction rate would be one 28-day cycle, so we quote whichever price is lower.
Can the driver call my foreman instead of me?
Yes. Put the foreman's name and number, the gate code and the placement notes on the work order. The driver calls that number 30 minutes ahead.
