How many porta potties does a festival need?

A festival needs about 1 porta potty per 250 guest-hours under our planning rule. For example, 1,000 guests over 6 hours equals 24 units, plus 6 more if alcohol is served. Add 1 hand wash station per 3 toilets for food, and make at least 5% of each cluster wheelchair-accessible.

Festival counts from our planning rule (not a legal requirement)
FestivalToiletsWith alcoholHand wash (food)Accessible (min.)
300 guests, 4 hours571–21 per cluster
500 guests, 4 hours81031 per cluster
1,000 guests, 6 hours2430101 per cluster; 2 in a cluster of 21+

Count the peak crowd, not the total tickets sold over a weekend. Use the porta potty calculator for other sizes, and confirm the final count with your permit office.

Festivals often mix unit types. Standard units carry the crowd. A restroom trailer or deluxe flushing units work well for a VIP area, sponsors or performers. Food vendors and their staff need hand washing close to the booths. Count each area as its own cluster, with its own accessible unit.

How should festival units be grouped into clusters?

Group festival units into clusters near food, stages and entrances, instead of 1 long row. 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 require at least 5% of the units in every cluster, and no less than 1, to be accessible. Put 1 or more hand wash stations at the end of each cluster.

Accessible units per cluster
Units in the clusterAccessible units required (min.)Our tip
1–201Put it at the end nearest the path

41–603Spread them along the row

The Comfort XL needs a clear path about 66 inches wide and firm ground. The rule is published by the U.S. Access Board. Our wheelchair-accessible porta potty page has the specs. Confirm layout rules with your event's permit office.

How are porta potties serviced during a multi-day festival?

Multi-day festivals add mid-event service visits between event days. Each visit pumps, cleans and restocks every unit. We size units for the busiest day, then plan 1 service visit per unit before each extra day. Visits run Monday to Saturday, so a Sunday is covered by the Saturday visit.

Heat and alcohol fill tanks faster. Whittier's hot season runs July to late September, with August highs near 86°F. For big summer festivals we add deodorizer and extra service. See our summer heat and Santa Ana wind tips.

  • Give the driver vehicle access to every cluster before gates open.
  • Keep service lanes clear of vendor booths and parked cars.
  • Name one on-site contact who can open gates and move barriers.

How many hand wash stations does a festival need?

Plan 1 hand wash station for every 3 toilets when food is served. A 30-toilet festival with food needs about 10 stations. Each PolyJohn Bravo station has 2 sinks and gives about 350 hand washes per fill, according to the manufacturer, so busy days need a refill at each service visit.

What do real large-event orders look like?

Two large orders from our 74-call review show the range. A half-marathon booked 14 units: 12 standard and 2 wheelchair-accessible. A 4-day shooting competition needed 16 units on site for all 4 days. A car show took 5 units, and an emergency shelter for about 463 people needed about 7.

Questions customers ask before booking

Real questions from our customer calls, answered by our dispatch team.

How much do festival porta potties cost?

A standard unit starts at $175 and a wheelchair-accessible unit at $225 per event, for up to 3 days on site. A hand wash station starts at $125. Mid-event service starts at $65 per unit per visit. Typical starting price as of October 2026; your itemized quote is final.

Does the accessible one come with a ramp?

No ramp is needed. The PolyJohn Comfort XL has a ground-level roll-in floor and a 32-inch door opening.

How early should we book for a festival?

Book when you apply for your event permit. In Whittier, that is at least 45 days ahead, and the permit asks you to arrange restrooms.

Can the units be dropped off a few days early for setup?

Yes. Event pricing covers up to 3 days on site. For longer setups or multi-day festivals we quote the extra days and service visits.

Do we need hand wash stations if no food is sold?

Our planning rule adds hand washing when food is served. Without food, sanitizer in each standard unit may be enough, but your permit office or health department may require more.

Can you put units in more than one spot on the grounds?

Yes. Send a site map with each cluster marked. Each spot needs truck access within 15 feet and firm, level ground.
