What should be on a backyard party porta potty checklist?
A backyard party porta potty checklist has 8 items: guest count and hours, number of units, placement spot, gate width, hand washing, night lighting, a heads-up to neighbors and delivery timing. Quinceañeras, birthdays and graduation parties in Whittier all use the same list. Most need 1–3 units.
- Count guests and hours. Use the peak number, not the invite list.
- Size the order. Our planning rule: guests × hours ÷ 250, rounded up.
- Choose the spot. Flat, firm ground within 15 feet of where the truck parks.
- Measure the gate. A PolyJohn PJN3 is 43.5" wide; the gate needs about 48" clear.
- Plan hand washing. Food means a hand wash station or a unit with a sink.
- Light the path. Parties that run past sunset need a lit route.
- Tell the neighbors. A quick note avoids complaints.
- Book the timing. Friday delivery, Monday pickup for weekend parties.

How many porta potties do I need for a backyard party?
A backyard party needs 1 porta potty for every 250 guest-hours, rounded up, under our planning rule. A 150-guest quinceañera running 6 hours with a bar needs 5 units: 150 × 6 ÷ 250 = 3.6, rounded to 4, plus 1 for alcohol. Add 2 hand wash stations when food is served.

Assumptions: our planning rule (guests × hours ÷ 250, rounded up), +1 unit per 4 when alcohol is served, 1 hand wash station per 3 toilets with food, and at least 5% wheelchair-accessible units per cluster (2010 ADA Standards §213.2). This is a planning estimate, not a legal requirement.
| Party | Guests × hours | Alcohol? | Toilets | Hand wash stations (with food) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kids’ birthday | 50 × 4 | No | 1 | 1 |
| Graduation party | 100 × 4 | Yes | 3 | 1 |
| Quinceañera | 150 × 6 | Yes | 5 | 2 |
| Large quinceañera or wedding | 200 × 6 | Yes | 7 | 3 |
For public events, make at least 1 unit wheelchair-accessible and at least 5% of the cluster, per 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Guests with walkers or strollers use them too. The full method is in our how many porta potties guide.

Where should a porta potty go at a Whittier home?
A porta potty at a Whittier home usually goes at the top of the driveway, in a side yard or on a flat corner of the back lawn. The spot must be level, firm and within 15 feet of where the truck can park, with a clear path about 4 feet wide and no wires lower than 12 feet.
| Unit | Model | Width | Gate needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | PolyJohn PJN3 | 43.5" | About 48" clear |
| Deluxe flushing unit | PolyJohn Fleet (FS3) | 47" | Wider than 48"; call us |
| Wheelchair-accessible unit | PolyJohn Comfort XL | 62" | About 66" clear |
| Hand wash station | PolyJohn Bravo | 26.5" | Fits most gates |
Measure the narrowest point: gate posts, trash bins or a side-yard AC unit. Driveway spots are easiest. On pavers or a lawn, ask for plywood pads; we are not responsible for marks when the customer picks the spot. Hillside homes should read our hillside driveway placement guide.
Does a backyard party porta potty come with a sink?
No. A standard porta potty comes with a hand sanitizer dispenser, not a sink. Parties with food should add a 2-station PolyJohn Bravo hand wash station, which holds 22 gallons of fresh water and rates at nearly 350 hand washes per fill. Our planning rule is 1 station per 3 toilets.
Another option is a standard unit with a built-in hand sink, or a deluxe flushing unit with a sink, soap and paper towels. Place the hand wash station next to the toilets, not by the food table, so guests use it on the way out. See hand wash station rental.
How do I light a porta potty for a party at night?
A porta potty needs outside light for any party that runs past sunset, which is about 8 p.m. in Whittier in summer and before 5 p.m. in December. The PolyJohn PJN3 has a translucent roof that lets in daylight but no light of its own. Place the unit near a porch light or string lights.
- Put the unit within reach of a porch or garage light.
- Run string lights or solar stake lights along the path.
- Keep the path free of cords, hoses and steps.
- Set a battery lantern on a hook or stand beside the door.
- For formal evening events, a restroom trailer with LED lighting solves lighting entirely.
How do I keep neighbors happy with a porta potty?
Keeping neighbors happy takes 3 steps: place the porta potty on your side of the property, face the door away from their windows, and tell them the dates before the truck arrives. Most complaints come from units near a shared fence or blocking part of the sidewalk. A short note solves most issues.
Keep the unit off the sidewalk and out of the street unless you have a permit. Close the door after the party so odor and wind stay down. For hot weekends, ask about a mid-event service so the unit stays fresh on day 2.
When should I book and receive a porta potty for a party?
Book a backyard party porta potty 1–2 weeks ahead in spring and summer, and at least 3 days ahead the rest of the year. Weekend parties are delivered Friday and picked up Monday at no extra cost. Same-day delivery is possible Monday–Saturday if you call by noon and a unit is in the yard.
Free cancellation runs up to 48 hours before delivery. Date changes are free with 24 hours’ notice. Read how weekend delivery and pickup work.
Do I need a permit to put a party porta potty on the street?
A party porta potty on your own driveway or yard usually needs no permit. A unit on a Whittier city street, sidewalk or parkway needs a Public Works encroachment permit; the city lists a $120 residential fee and asks for 24 hours’ notice at (562) 567-9500. Unincorporated areas use LA County permits through EPIC-LA.

How many porta potties do I need for 100 people for 4 hours?
Our planning rule gives 2 units (100 × 4 ÷ 250 = 1.6, rounded up). With a bar, add 1 for 3 total. Add 1 hand wash station if food is served.
How much is one porta potty for a backyard quinceañera?
A standard event unit starts at $175 with delivery, setup and pickup for up to 3 days. A hand wash station starts at $125. Typical starting price as of October 2026; your itemized quote is final.
Do they all come with the seat and the little urinal?
Yes. Every standard PolyJohn PJN3 has a seat with lid, a urinal, 2 toilet paper holders and a hand sanitizer dispenser.
Can it go by the sidewalk?
Only with a permit if it sits on the public sidewalk, street or parkway. Your driveway or yard usually needs no permit.
Can you put a hold on it while I check with my wife?
Yes. We text or email the itemized quote and can hold the unit for 24 hours while you decide.
Will the porta potty smell during a hot party?
Units arrive clean with fresh deodorizer. For big summer parties, place the unit in shade and ask about a mid-event service visit.
